A Spring Airlines Japan flight from Shanghai to Tokyo made an emergency landing in Osaka on Monday evening after a suspected cabin pressure failure forced the Boeing 737-800 to descend rapidly from 11,000 meters to just 3,000 meters.
This triggered the deployment of oxygen masks and left terrified passengers drafting what they feared might be their final messages to loved ones.
The harrowing incident occurred at 8.50pm Japan time yesterday aboard flight JL8696/IJ004.
According to Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the crew received an alert from the cabin pressure system and declared an emergency, initiating a controlled rapid descent.
Flight tracking data showed the aircraft plunged nearly 8,000 meters in about 10 minutes.
All 191 passengers and crew escaped physical injury, but psychological trauma was significant. One passenger, referred to as Wang, shared that the sight of flight attendants appearing on the verge of tears completely shattered her composure.
She described the cabin falling eerily silent as oxygen masks dropped and admitted to imagining her potential demise. Having survived, she expressed a hope for future good fortune.
Another passenger shared her experience of drafting a farewell note to her husband during the descent. She mentioned that by the time she finished writing, she was overwhelmed with emotion. Several children were also onboard during the terrifying ordeal.
The aircraft diverted to Kansai International Airport, where passengers experienced further frustration, being confined onboard for an additional hour before deplaning.
