The Luohu District in Shenzhen set up over a hundred one-touch emergency devices in various tourist hotspots to facilitate visitors to get help from the police if necessary.
The "emergency call for help" devices come with bilingual instructions and a red button for people to seek help from officers if they get lost or encounter other emergencies like crimes.
It was learned that the officers could pick up the call within seconds. The force will be able to locate them through the devices and ensure the cases can be handled effectively and timely.
The devices were targeted to help those without a mobile and visitors unfamiliar with locations, transportation, and the mainland's emergency hotline.
A total of 105 devices were launched since late September with three types of forms, including wall-mounted, column-mounted, and robotic ones that will patrol automatically. The authority will extend the service to other parts of Shenzhen later.
A Hong Kong resident surnamed Tsim used the device early this month to consult on the application for a Shenzhen residence permit from the police.
A Shenzhen resident surnamed Li also tried to contact the officers after he had a verbal dispute with another person whose phone was accidentally damaged by his child.
According to sources, areas such as country parks will also set up kiosk-type alarm devices to facilitate the public calling the police when their cell phones are out of battery or have been lost.
