Taiwan confirmed 14 new imported coronavirus patients on Friday, the highest number reported in one day since April, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

Thirteen of the patients were female Indonesian migrant workers in their 20s to 40s, said Lo Yi-chun, deputy chief of the CECC's medical response division, at a press conference in Taipei, CNA reports.

Twelve of them arrived in Taiwan on November 12 on the same flight, while the other one arrived on November 11, Lo said.

The 13 women were tested for on completion of their mandatory 14-day quarantine, and the results were positive, he said.

They were all asymptomatic, except one who said she developed a sore throat on November 19 and a runny nose on November 23 but did not immediately report the symptoms, according to Lo.

According to Lo, these could be isolated infections, rather than a cluster, as the women attended job training at several different centers in Indonesia and did not sit close to each other on the flight to Taiwan.

The 14th patient confirmed Friday was that of a Taiwanese man in his 30s, who resides in the United States and reported no symptoms on arrival in Taiwan on November 20, Lo said.

After checking into a quarantine hotel, the man developed a sore, dry throat and fatigue on November 21, but did not report his symptoms to health authorities until Wednesday, Lo said.

Eleven people who sat near the man on the flight to Taiwan have been asked to watch out for any symptoms during their quarantine, while 12 other contacts, including the flight crew and a driver, were deemed sufficiently protected and will not be required to self-isolate, Lo said.

The 14 new cases were the highest number of new imported infections reported in Taiwan in a single day since April 19, when 22 cases were confirmed, 21 of which were part of a cluster infection aboard a Taiwanese naval ship, according to CECC statistics.

To date, Taiwan has reported 639 coronavirus patients, 547 of whom are classified as imported. Of the total, 555 patients have recovered, seven have died and 77 are in hospital, according to CECC data.

Indonesia has recorded 516,753 coronavirus patients and 16,352 fatalities, according to Worldometers data valid as of Friday.
