Over 70 percent of employers would consider hiring youths with Special Educational Needs (SEN) due to their commendable work ethics and abilities.
A two-month survey conducted by the Youth Employment Network -- a platform under the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) -- in June revealed that 74 percent of the 102 local companies were willing to employ SEN youths.
Although 76.5 percent of the respondents have never hired youths with SEN, they suggested more government support, including job matching and referral (26.2 percent) as well as subsidies (22.4 percent), will motivate employers to hire SEN individuals.
Some companies found assistance from social welfare organizations helpful in enhancing the SEN youths’ career opportunities, ranging from career planning guidance and counseling services.
To address concerns regarding the capabilities of SEN youth, the HKFYG introduced a new program for local companies with professional assistance to create win-win opportunities.
Business partners will receive consultancy services, job matching, and suggestions for workplace modification to support the integration of SEN youths.
Meanwhile, SEN employees will benefit from 12-month assistance, such as job skills training and life planning counseling, to aid their transition in the workplace.
