Customs officers arrested two women on Tuesday and Wednesday night after busting an attempt to smuggle cocaine via Hong Kong International Airport by disguising them as bars of soap.
The first arrested woman arrived in Hong Kong from Hanoi, Vietnam, on February 13 (Tue).
During customs clearance, when the check-in baggage passed the x-ray examination, there was something suspicious about the image, and upon further inspection, a batch of suspected cocaine was found concealed inside her check-in baggage.
The woman was subsequently arrested, and about six kilograms of suspected cocaine worth HK$550,000 were seized.
After a follow-up investigation, another woman suspected to be connected with the case was also arrested at the airport yesterday (Feb 14).
The two arrested persons have been jointly charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drugs, and they will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (Feb 16).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offense. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of HK$5 million and life imprisonment.
