Wuhan coronavirus spreads to Shanghai, after Beijing and Shenzhen report infections

Shanghai has reported its first patient infected with the Wuhan coronavirus.

Earlier the capital Beijing, the southern hub Shenzhen and eastern Zhejiang confirmed infections.

The news reported by the state media, came just minutes after President Xi Jinping made his first public comments on the need to contain the Wuhan virus spread.

The World Health Organisation has said the Wuhan coronavirus has the ability to spread from person to person.

Xinhua said Xi has ordered resolute efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus that caused cases of pneumonia.'

He stressed the need to make people's safety and health the top priority.

As of 6:00 pm today, the number of Chinese infected has soared to 224. Of those, 217 had been confirmed.

Five individuals in Beijing and 14 in southern  Guangdong province have also been diagnosed with the new coronavirus, state broadcaster CCTV reported. A total of seven suspected cases have been found in other parts of the country, including in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in the southwest and in Shanghai.
