An easyJet flight from Malaga, Spain, to London Gatwick returned to the gate shortly before takeoff after cabin crew became concerned about an 89-year-old British woman who was unresponsive.
The woman had boarded the aircraft in a wheelchair accompanied by family members, who reportedly told crew she was "tired" and "unwell." However, during taxiing, crew members suspected she showed no signs of life.
The captain was alerted and the aircraft returned to the gate. Emergency services boarded and confirmed the woman had died.
It remains unclear whether she passed away before or after boarding. The flight was delayed for about 12 hours before resuming its journey.
EasyJet expressed condolences, stating the passenger had provided medical documentation upon boarding and appeared to show signs of life at the time. The airline denied knowingly allowing a deceased passenger to board and provided assistance to affected travelers.
Other passengers expressed shock, with some noting the woman "did not look like she was just sleeping." Under standard procedures, repatriating a body from overseas can cost several thousand pounds.
No arrests have been made, and authorities are investigating the circumstances.
