Japan's Sakurajima volcano erupted early Sunday, sending volcanic ash and smoke soaring 4,400 meters into the air and prompting authorities to issue ashfall warnings for surrounding areas.
The Meteorological Agency reported the eruption occurred before dawn, with Kagoshima officials confirming no immediate damage or injuries. The agency warned that repeated eruptions could cause ashfall across parts of Kagoshima and neighboring Miyazaki prefecture.
Authorities advised residents in affected areas to take protective measures including using umbrellas and masks, while drivers were urged to reduce speeds for safety.
The volcano remains at alert level 3 on Japan's 5-level scale, restricting access to areas surrounding the mountain.
