Set in 19 acres of pristine landscape, Hong Kong Golf & Tennis Academy (HKGTA) is the city’s ultimate holistic sports and wellness destination, offering bespoke expert-led training programmes at its world-class sporting institutes. One of their patrons discusses why he and his family joined the Academy:
Cary Cheung, 2017 Hong Kong National Boxing Champion, 2020 Hong Kong Olympic Team Qualifier and current Hong Kong National Boxing Team Coach, is one of HKGTA’s newest patrons. Cheung began his amateur boxing journey late, earning him the nickname “Uncle”, but his determination training with the best coaches helped him on his rise to number one.
“Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to have trained under the very best and Hong Kong’s National Team Coach, Mike Tang, has always in my corner supporting me ever since I decided to box competitively in 2016. Whenever I’m in the ring, I can hear his voice guiding me.”
Since his son’s birth, Cheung had been looking to join a private member’s club. After a friend mentioned enjoying a staycation at HKGTA, Cheung decided to find out for himself. “Even before entering the grounds, we immediately fell in love with the place and applied for Patronship in 2021,” he enthuses.
Cheung advises young athletes looking to develop their sports career that it’s never too late to start training with the best coaches. “HKGTA’s coaches are fantastic. You can feel their passion and professionalism for the sport. You’ll find coaches there that look after your wellbeing, challenge your abilities and push athletes in the right direction.”
“I’d absolutely recommend HKGTA to other families, as everyone there is so welcoming and helpful,” he adds. “It’s the ideal environment for your kids to be safe and have fun, especially during Covid times.”
Open now for 2022 applications
Hong Kong Golf & Tennis Academy was founded in 2016 as a space where potential of all kinds can be realised and greatness could thrive. Set amongst over 19 acres of pristine landscape in the heart of Sai Kung, HKGTA offers the highest standards of elite sports training, alongside unparalleled service for Patrons of all ages and abilities. Quicky becoming Hong Kong’s most coveted Academy, HKGTA boasts a community of 700 Patron families who call it their second home.
This family-oriented academy offers a wide-ranging sports curriculum including PGA of America, Rafa Nadal Tennis Center, Elite Swim and Joint Dynamics; guests can choose to participate in private one-on-one lessons or groups of six per class.
Tennis enthusiasts will be thrilled to hear that the region’s first Rafa Nadal Tennis Center will launch there in July 2022, bringing an unprecedented level of tennis training to HKGTA’s already world-class facilities. Featuring seven outdoor courts, an indoor court and two mini tennis courts, the new Center is inspired by the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, in Rafa Nadal’s hometown of Mallorca, Spain.
Combining a professional-level environment with some of the world’s very best coaching staff, the Center uses the same methodology that has led Rafa Nadal to the top of the professional circuit. Designed by the technical team that has been with Rafa Nadal throughout his sporting career, this methodology is suitable for players at all levels, and has been fine-tuned by Rafa Nadal and his coaches through decades of professional tennis play.
This cutting-edge system is updated regularly to reflect the constant evolution of technology, equipment and the game itself, together with training in the values fundamental to Rafa Nadal’s success – such as mobility, training and game intensity, concentration and a winning attitude. Spanning the game’s physical, mental, technical and strategic aspects, this 360-approach thus shapes players to become the best version of themselves.
Whatever your sporting, fitness or leisure needs, HKGTA’s leading facilities and excellent coaching will help you be among the greats.
