Former Disney chief executive Bob Iger is at the top of US President-elect Joe Biden's wish list for a key ambassador post in China or Britain, according to reports.

The United Kingdom post is considered the most plum diplomatic assignment, while China is an intriguing possibility, given Disney's footprint in the mainland, Hollywood Reporter said.

It added either would be a fitting next act for the 69-year-old, considered the most successful Hollywood CEO of the modern era.

An ambassadorship for Iger, who this year toyed with the idea of a presidential run, would mark the end of his 25-year run at Disney.

He stepped down in February and slipped into the role of executive chairman. His contract expires at the end of next year.

Amid the pandemic, successor Bob Chapek was at the helm during the most turbulent nine months in the company's history.

Considering Hollywood's broad support of Biden during the presidential campaign, it was no surprise that Jeffrey Katzenberg, a film producer and prolific Democratic Party donor, was also reported to be eyed for an ambassadorship.

New York Jets coowner Woody Johnson has held the UK ambassador post since 2017. If Iger is given the post, he would join an illustrious list that includes Joseph Kennedy.

It also would not preclude a presidential bid in his future, Hollywood Reporter said.

Six US presidents served as UK ambassador, including John Adams and James Buchanan.

Iger, who had served as Disney chief since 2005,oversaw its acquisitions of the Star Wars franchise, Marvel, and 21st Century Fox.

He recently talked about his desire to enter politics: "I really thought about running for governor and running for senator and running for mayor of New York and ultimately thought about running for president, which is I guess the ultimate sacrifice really."
