JAL, ANA hike international flight surcharges as fuel prices soar

Japan’s two major airlines, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA), announced that they will sharply increase fuel surcharges for international flights booked in May and June.

The decision comes in response to soaring aviation fuel prices driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East. Originally, both airlines had planned to implement the surcharge hikes in June, but have moved up the timetable due to the rapid surge in fuel costs.

For flights departing Japan to North America and Europe, JAL’s surcharge will jump from ¥29,000 (around HK$1,420) to ¥56,000 (around HK$2,750). As for ANA, the surcharge will rise from ¥31,900 (around HK$1,570) to ¥56,000.

Surcharges for flights to South Korea will also more than double for both airliners.

Separately, JAL has suspended its Tokyo-Doha service until May 10, and Doha-Tokyo flights until May 11.
