Nearly 30 percent of spouses accompanying individuals admitted under the Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS) are employed in Hong Kong, primarily in managerial roles, according to Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han.
Speaking at a Legislative Council meeting, Sun reported that the TTPS has brought approximately 230,000 individuals to the city as of August, many of whom have been accompanied by their families.
Sun said the influx of talent and their dependents helps to offset the natural population decline and address the city's challenges of low birth rates and an aging demographic.
In response to concerns from lawmaker Lam Chun-sing regarding the impact of these dependents on the local job market, Sun clarified that nearly 30 percent of eligible spouses are employed, earning a median monthly income of HK$30,000, with most working in managerial or professional positions.
However, Sun explained that the overall labour force participation rate for this group remains relatively low. He highlighted a continued need to attract highly qualified individuals to fill vacancies in specific sectors.
Sun also addressed visa renewals, noting that around 20,000 visas are set to expire within the next five months, creating a peak renewal period in the first half of next year.
While the renewal rate is promising, he acknowledged that some individuals may choose not to extend their stay due to difficulties in securing suitable employment.
He assured lawmakers that the government would continue to engage with these individuals to understand their situations.
