A To Kwa Wan car mechanic who confronted police over parking enforcement during a concert event on Tuesday has clarified his stance, stating the incident was a misunderstanding and that he supports the crackdown on illegal parking, after officers ultimately decided not to issue him a ticket.
A car mechanic from To Kwa Wan’s 13 Streets area, who was filmed yelling at police issuing parking tickets on Tuesday, has explained that the confrontation stemmed from a misunderstanding.
The man, who operates a repair shop on Yin On Street near Kai Tak Sports Park, stated today that he agrees police should crack down on illegal parking and confirmed the officers did not ticket him.
The incident occurred around 5pm yesterday (Aug 19), as police and two traffic wardens patrolled the area ahead of a concert at the sports park.
The shop owner expressed frustration that the early enforcement disrupted his business, leading to the confrontation.
He explained that his frustration was due to the lack of prior notice, not the enforcement itself. "They came as early as 5pm to force us to move," he said, noting that large events since the park’s opening have frequently led to increased police presence, which he feels negatively impacts local trade.
“Every time there’s a concert, police will come and cause trouble,” he said.
While he supports parking regulations, he contrasted the recent action with the approach of higher-ranking officers in the past, who he said would communicate in advance and inquire if events were affecting businesses.
The owner emphasized that local shops are willing to cooperate and try not to obstruct traffic, noting that vehicles parked outside his shop still allow for passage.
He concluded by acknowledging that the officers did not issue him a ticket on this occasion.
