The Hospital Authority calls for liver donations as two critically ill patients are in desperate need of transplants. They are also preparing to seek assistance from the mainland.
The families of both patients have joined in on the plea, urging the public to support organ donation and actively consider donating the organs of their deceased loved ones to save lives.
One of the patients is suffering from severe liver and kidney failure and has lapsed into a hepatic coma, with serious complications including hepatorenal syndrome and hepatic encephalopathy. The patient is now in the Adult Intensive Care Unit and is relying on a ventilator to survive.
The second patient has acute liver failure with severely impaired kidney function, and has developed life-threatening hepatorenal syndrome as well. Both patients are currently hospitalized and in critical condition at Queen Mary Hospital.
Cross-border donation as the other hope
In view of the critical conditions the patients are in, the Authority is not only actively searching for a suitable liver for the patients locally, it is also preparing to seek assistance from the mainland through government intervention.
When a patient in the mainland willing to donate organs passes away and there is a lack of suitable patients locally to accept transplants, cross-border organ donation can be coordinated to Hong Kong for matched transplants, igniting hope in critically ill patients.
The spokesperson emphasized that when a suitable liver is found, the Authority will immediately initiate an application with regulatory bodies in strict compliance with organ transplant laws and regulations.
All procedures will adhere to established medical standards and legal requirements to ensure a swift and compliant process. The Authority will expedite arrangements for the transplant surgery at the earliest opportunity, offering the patients a renewed chance at life.
Organ transplants can be someone’s chance at Life
For critically ill patients with organ failure, organ transplantation is their only hope to survive. The deceased patients and their families show selfless love and donate their own organs to save dying patients. This not only gives the critically ill patients a second chance at life, but also brings solace to grieving families during difficult times.
The Hospital Authority calls on the public to embrace the spirit of generosity and compassion, to allow love to transcend life itself. Through choosing to donate, one can extend blessings and renewed hope to those fighting for their lives.
