Lawmaker and Transport Department officers headed to Fanling and Sheung Shui to assess the feasibility of implementing diagonal pedestrian crossings in the districts.
Gary Zhang Xinyu from New Prospect for Hong Kong conducted on-site inspections at the intersections near Fanling Town Centre and Sheung Shui Tin Ping Estate with government representatives on Monday.
After the preliminary assessments of the flow of vehicles and people, the Transport Department believed that the locations were suitable for introducing the diagonal crossing.
The party said authorities will soon expand the implementation of diagonal crossings to the North District for the convenience of the public.
The government started a pilot scheme of diagonal crossing back in January at the junction of Sha Kok Street and Yee Tai Street in Sha Tin, as well as the intersection of Carnarvon Road and Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung said the measure could be officially implemented in Tsim Sha Tsui as early as mid-year, and the authorities will observe the situation along with consider public opinionsfor design improvements.
Meanwhile, crossing diagonally at locations outside the pilot areas would violate the Road Traffic Ordinance, in which citizens could be fined up to HK$2,000.
