The Immigration Department announced on Wednesday the launch of Passport Mobile Application Stations (PMAS), where Hong Kong citizens can renew expired passports or make new passport applications.
As the world opens up post-Covid, many Hongkongers are preparing to go abroad. However, official data shows over 900,000 citizens' passports have expired since 2021.
The two mobile application station vehicles, converted from two trucks, will travel around all 18 districts of Hong Kong from today (July 13) until early September.
The mobile stations will operate from 10am to 6pm and can be found near residential areas, shopping malls, and locations with high pedestrian flow.
Immigration staff will be stationed onboard the vehicles to help citizens apply for their new HKSAR passports online or by post.
Hillson Fan Hiu-sing, assistant director of the immigration department, stated that many countries require passports to be valid for 6 months or more before allowing people to enter and urges the public to prepare ahead for travel.
Eligible applicants only need to bring their valid Hong Kong permanent identity cards to submit their passport applications. Moreover, with help from the PMAS, photos for the passport can be taken on the spot, and payment can be made online.
Aside from the Passport Mobile Application Stations, citizens can also complete their application online, at the Immigration headquarters in Wan Chai, and at the seven different Immigration department branch offices around the city.
It is understood that mobile application stations can be found outside Shin Mei House of Fu Shin Estate in Tai Po and the Wan Chai Computer Center today.
