Hong Kong stocks rose for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday, an increase of 0.23 percent, though the day's turnover shrank as investors turned to a wait-and-see attitude amid the changing US tariff policies.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index ended at 21,466 points, 48 points or 0.23 percent higher than Monday’s close. The main board turnover dropped to HK$185.06 billion.

The indicator once hit as high as 21,603 at the opening bell and as low as 21,297 in the afternoon session.

But the Hang Seng Tech Index closed Tuesday below the 5,000-point bar, sliding 0.67 percent to 4,981.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index inched up 4 points or 0.15 percent to 3,267 while the Shenzhen Component Index dipped 26 points, or 0.27 percent, to 9,858.

This came after the Trump administration targeted imports of pharmaceuticals and semiconductors as part of a bid to impose tariffs, citing national security threats, while considering pausing levies against autos, bringing more uncertainties to markets.

Semiconductor Manufacturing International (0981) retreated 4.5 percent, the worst-performing blue chip stock.

Smartphone component makers BYD Electronic International (0285) and Sunny Optical Technology (2382) fell about 2.4 percent.
