Observatory: 4.0-magnitude quake hits Yangjiang in Guangdong, tremors felt in Hong Kong

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Yangjiang in southern Guangdong on Friday afternoon (Feb 20), with tremors felt across Hong Kong for several seconds, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The quake occurred at 2.28pm, at a depth of about 11 kilometers, with its epicenter about 22 kilometers southwest of Yangjiang, or roughly 260 kilometers west-southwest of Hong Kong, according to preliminary analysis.

More than 100 residents reported feeling the shaking, which lasted a few seconds.

The observatory said the tremor reached intensity level III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, meaning it was noticeable indoors and similar to vibrations caused by a passing light truck.
