Customs warns against bringing raw meat, eggs from mainland during holidays

Hong Kong Customs has reminded the public that it is illegal to bring raw meat or eggs into Hong Kong without proper authorization, as many residents shop at mainland supermarket chains during the Lunar New Year holidays.

In a statement on Monday (the eve of Lunar New Year), Customs reiterated that importing game, meat, poultry or eggs without a valid health certificate issued by the origin's issuing authority and/or the prior written permission of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department is an offence.

Offenders convicted under the Import of Game, Meat, Poultry and Eggs Regulations are liable to a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and six months' imprisonment.
