A tense 30-second clip circulating online had Hong Kong netizens holding their breath this week, showing a young foreign man in a suit and earphones slumped motionless on a Citybus route 619, completely unresponsive as the driver and passengers frantically tried to rouse him.
The incident unfolded shortly after 11pm on Wednesday night as the double-decker traveled from Lam Tin towards Sheung Shui.
Fellow passengers first noticed the man sitting with his head bowed and a travel bag beside him, showing no reaction even when the driver repeatedly called “hello” and patted his arm.
Alarmed, the driver immediately dialed 999 while telling everyone on board that something seemed seriously wrong.
The person filming could be heard wondering aloud whether the passenger was simply asleep or if something far worse had happened, while the caption invoked Buddhist prayers in hope that he would be fine.
Online reactions ranged from somber to darkly humorous, with some insisting his complexion did not look lifeless and others reminding everyone that “unconscious and dead are two different things.”
Police confirmed they received the emergency call at 11.12pm reporting a male passenger who appeared to have collapsed opposite Lam Tin MTR station.
Paramedics arrived within minutes and found the 26-year-old foreign national had regained consciousness.
Officers quickly determined he had merely been in a very deep sleep, reclassified the case from “person unconscious” to “false alarm,” and no hospital treatment was required.
