Sex workers in Hong Kong have been approaching faith-based support groups with an unexpected confession, I heard on Saturday: "We want to change jobs."

They complain that their "industry" has been harder hit than hotels or airlines, yet they get no sympathy and zero taxpayer bail-outs. They are massively disillusioned.

Supporters are delighted they are leaving the dangerous trade and discreetly finding retraining courses for them.

The toughest part is carefully wording the women's CVs. "Previous employment: public relations."

Meanwhile, Hong Kong volunteers found a smart way to feed lots of hungry people without breaking social distancing rules, also on Saturday. Members of a small Kowloon church pre-paid thousands of dollars to sellers of meat and vegetables at a local market in Mong Kok and then distributed vouchers to needy families who could buy food when they needed it. "We basically applied the business principle of 'decentralization' to the food bank," said a volunteer. The retailers were thrilled too.

The US put DJI, the world's biggest drone company, on to the "banned-in-America" list, the BBC reported yesterday. The dronemaker traces its history back to a grant of HK$18,000 handed to a student at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology back in 2005. The Trump administration claims such decisions are about security, but many business people point out that there's already a word for when political decisions ride roughshod over considerations of capitalism, logic, truth and the rule of law: authoritarianism.

US official Mike Pompeo told the world at the weekend that the 12 Hong Kong people jailed in the mainland had committed no crimes. Their only "so-called 'crime' was to flee tyranny," he said. So we now have it IN WRITING from the US secretary of state that bomb-making, assault, rioting, illegal possession of weapons and bail-jumping are not crimes.
