The US government is reportedly considering declaring TP-Link Systems, a popular router manufacturer with deep Chinese roots, a national security threat, according to a Bloomberg report, a move that could restrict or ban its US operations.
TP-Link, whose Wi-Fi equipment is widely used across American households, has been under scrutiny since last year over its ties to China.
The report said the preliminary assessment has been ready for some time but recent weeks have seen increased activity that could lead to its implementation.
The company said it continues to work closely with the Commerce Department to address concerns and mitigate any potential risks identified. TP-Link expressed confidence that the review would ultimately validate the security of its operations and products.
Originally founded in China around 30 years ago, TP-Link completed a corporate split last year, creating two separate entities: one US company headquartered in Irvine, California, and another Chinese enterprise based in Shenzhen.
