Typhoon Dolphin injures six in Taiwan as Keelung port containers collapse

Typhoon Dolphin brought violent winds and torrential rain to northern Taiwan on Sunday as it passed closest to the island, causing 632 incidents and injuring six people, disaster authorities said.

In Keelung port, a row of heavy containers at the Yang Ming Marine Transport terminal collapsed under powerful gusts, with some containers weighing dozens of tonnes falling and crushing a crane ladder and port equipment. Steel plates were torn and deformed, though no injuries were reported.

Taipei recorded the most incidents at 277, followed by New Taipei with 177, Keelung with 84 and Taoyuan with 59. Most reports involved fallen trees, building damage, power outages and damaged traffic facilities.

The Central Weather Administration warned that the typhoon's circulation remained extremely close to northern Taiwan, with astronomical tides causing seawater to flood areas around Keelung's night market to a depth of 30 centimetres.
