A norovirus outbreak has affected 2,087 people at Shenyang Normal University since August 31, with contaminated well water identified as the source of the gastrointestinal illness.
The Shenyang Center for Disease Control announced students began experiencing vomiting, diarrhea and other gastroenteritis symptoms. Investigation revealed norovirus contamination in the water storage tank of a self-equipped well in the university's third living area.
As of 5pm on September 7, 1,817 patients had recovered while 270 remained with mild symptoms. The outbreak peak has passed with only 25 new cases reported from September 6-7.

Some students required emergency treatment for dehydration caused by severe vomiting and diarrhea. Disease control authorities have conducted multiple disinfection procedures at contamination points and performed epidemiological investigations along with environmental and personnel testing.
The university has sealed the contaminated well, coordinated with water authorities to ensure supply, and begun connecting to the municipal water system.
Norovirus is a common cause of acute gastroenteritis with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Children typically experience more vomiting while adults predominantly have diarrhea.
