A furious passenger hurled his uncertified power bank onto the ground at Wuhan Tianhe International Airport after being rejected at the security checkpoint, causing it to instantly burst into flames.
Since June 28, passengers traveling on domestic flights in China have been prohibited from carrying power banks that lack the China Compulsory Certification (3C), have unclear markings, or are under product recall.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (July 16), when the man, surnamed Shen, attempted to bring the power bank lacking the 3C mark through airport security.
After being informed by staff that he could not carry the device under the new restrictions, he became enraged and threw it to the ground, triggering an immediate fire.
It is reported that Shen will face five days of administrative detention for violating the law.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) implemented the ban following multiple in-flight incidents involving fires and smoke caused by lithium battery products, including power banks.
In early June, Chinese brand Romoss initiated a recall of over 490,000 power banks, following a March incident in which one of its power banks caught fire in an overhead compartment during a flight from Hangzhou to Hong Kong.
