Nearly 40 leading companies from the Greater Bay Area promoted career opportunities in Hong Kong for overseas talent at a career expo held last weekend (April 12–13) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Organized by the Labour and Welfare Bureau and Hong Kong Talent Engage (HKTE), the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Talent Development Showcase attracted a combined attendance of over 4,000.
The participating enterprises, from industries including technology, I&T, engineering, finance, accounting, legal services, insurance, and real estate, provided talents from Southeast Asia with a wide range of career options.
Anthony Lau Chun-ho, the Director of HKTE, stressed that the number of attendees was higher than expected, reflecting that talents in Malaysia have shown interest in developing their careers in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, certain companies pointed out that Malaysian talents possess a language advantage for certain positions, which are difficult to fill with appropriate talent in Hong Kong.
They also mentioned that local applicants are concerned about salary, working visa arrangements, and housing issues in Hong Kong.
Edward Au Chun-hing, the president of The Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, highlighted that the accounting standards in both Hong Kong and Malaysia align with international norms and could diminish barriers to the mobility of professionals between the two regions.
In addition, the former president of the Law Society of Hong Kong, Chan Chak-ming, noted that overseas talent could practice law in Hong Kong without taking an examination under the organization’s registered foreign lawyer system.
He added that Hong Kong requires more professionals well-versed in Islamic law, which is where Malaysian lawyers excel.
