Posts on Xiaohongshu have included screenshots asserting that a dress worn by the 27-year-old Leavitt in January at a press conference can be traced back to the Chinese online shopping platform Taobao, where several users claimed that the red dress with black lace accents was produced in a Chinese factory.
Zhang Zhisheng, the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Denpasar, Indonesia, also shared an image of Leavitt wearing the concerned red dress on X.
“Accusing China is business. Buying China is life," Zhang remarked in a post. "The beautiful lace on the dress was recognized by an employee of a Chinese company as its product.
Leavitt's red dress, despite being noted by some for its resemblance to a product from the UK brand Self-Portrait, also elicited significant discussion among Chinese netizens.
"Two-faced behavior. Don't wear it then, don't use it," some wrote on Xiaohongshu. Hypocrites exposed," another comment read.
"Blaming 'Made in China' is her job; enjoying 'Made in China' is her life," one commenter wrote.
However, there were also opinions expressed that emphasized the prevalence of clothing produced in China nowadays, leading some individuals to argue that such circumstances do not constitute hypocrisy.
This is not the first instance of Chinese officials participating in the online discussions between China and the United States regarding the trade war.
A separate post shared by Mao Ning, the spokeswoman for China's foreign ministry, displayed former President Trump's signature "MAGA" hat, which was labeled as "Made in China."
