Tsinghua University tops Asia ranking: Times Higher Education

Tsinghua University in Beijing has made to the top 10th of the latest reputation ranking from Times Higher Education. It also surpassed Tokyo University and became the most prestigious university in Asia.

The University of Hong Kong ranked 48th, a small jump from the 51-60 class last year, sharing the ranking together with PSL Research University in Paris.

Almost 11,000 academics from around the world rated universities according to how well-regarded they are, with a total of 202 universities from 29 countries or regions featuring on the World Reputation Ranking 2021.

Tsinghua University leaped from 13th place to 10th this year, which marked its highest position since the establishment of the ranking in 2011 and became the first Chinese institution to join the top 10.

Harvard University clinched the top spot for the 11th consecutive year and the United States remains the most represented country, with 57 institutions.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Oxford came in second and third respectively.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, all placed the same as previous years, ranking in the 91-100, 101-125 and 126-150 groups respectively.

A total of 17 mainland universities were named on the list, including Peking University, which edged up one ranking to 15th from 16th this year.

The National University of Singapore retained its position at 24, while Seoul National University in South Korea 41.

Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer at Times Higher Education, said universities' reputation plays “a vital role” in attracting talents, new partnerships and even inward investment.

“Mainland China’s breakthrough into the top 10 and its results across the table show that its excellence in higher education is increasingly coming to the notice of the wider world,” he added.
