Hang Seng rallies by more than 860 points on US aid package deal news

Stocks soared in Hong Kong as news emerged that US lawmakers have agreed to a nearly US$2 trillion economic rescue package.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index jumped by 863.70 points, or 3.81 percent at 23,527.19.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index closed higher by 2.17 percent, or 59.15 points at 2,781.59.  The Shenzhen Stock Exchange Composite Index shot up by 2.92 percent, or 48.63 points at 1,714.86.

In Australia, at noon local time, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up by 3.4 percent or 160 points to 4,896, easing back from its early highs. All sectors had increased, led by miners, industrial firms and banks.
