The accident occurred at approximately 2:47pm local time at Jeju's Udo Island CheonJin Port terminal. A sport utility vehicle driven by a man in his 60s suddenly accelerated after leaving the ferry, crashing into the terminal waiting area and striking pedestrians along the pier before finally stopping after hitting a utility pole.
According to Jeju Fire and Safety Headquarters, three victims were in cardiac arrest at the scene - a woman in her 60s from the vehicle, a male pedestrian in his 70s, and another man in his 60s. All three were transported by helicopter to hospital but were later pronounced dead.
At least 10 others sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious, including the driver, passengers and bystanders. Two victims remained in serious condition requiring further treatment.
Police are investigating whether the accident resulted from accelerator malfunction or driver error. Authorities will review terminal surveillance footage and vehicle data while conducting detailed interviews with the driver.
The popular tourist destination was crowded with visitors at the time of the incident, which caused significant damage to the terminal structure and left debris scattered across the pier.
