Mahjong has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity in the United States, particularly among women between the ages of 35 and 40. The demographic has been attracted to the game due to its combination of luck, skill, and opportunities for social interaction, leading some to refer to mahjong as "Momjong."
In cities like Washington, Los Angeles and New York, interest in mahjong continues to rise, thanks to the emergence of mahjong coaches, instructors, and online influencers. Notably, several renowned restaurants and hotels have begun hosting mahjong nights to cater to the growing enthusiasm.
"Whatever style you play, it serves as a means to foster social connections," said a mahjong coach in the United States. "This sentiment underscores the importance of human interaction, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic."
A number of prominent public figures have also embraced the game. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has publicly shared her experiences with mahjong during television appearances.
Additionally, Hollywood actresses Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Amy Poehler have recounted their journeys in learning to play mahjong.
Brands including Ralph Lauren and Hermès have capitalized on the trend by designing high-end mahjong merchandise.
After becoming popular in the late 19th century, mahjong spread across the globe from China, leaving behind various variations of the game in both Asia and the United States. It also gained attention at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
The current mahjong craze stems from a key scene in the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians, in which the leading actress taught her snobbish, wealthy future mother-in-law a lesson with a game of mahjong.
