A hotel in Japan's Aichi Prefecture has experienced an unprecedented wave of cancellations from Chinese tour groups following recent political tensions between China and Japan.
The hotel in Gamagori City has received mass cancellations since November 16, with 28 tour groups involving approximately 1,000 visitors canceling their November bookings alone, according to Chubu-Nippon Broadcasting.
Hotel manager Takeuchi Keiko said nearly all remaining bookings for this year have been canceled, noting the reason was clearly "the influence of the political situation."
The hotel, which relies on Chinese guests for about half its business, had previously experienced cancellations during the 2012 Senkaku Islands dispute, but never on this scale. Takeuchi described the current situation as abnormal, noting cancellations were occurring even after final participant lists had been confirmed, with travel agencies requesting waived cancellation fees.
Travel agencies have cited "the Chinese government's request for citizens to avoid traveling to Japan" as reason for seeking fee exemptions. Takeuchi expressed deep concern about the impact, stating the cancellations threaten not only her hotel but the entire regional tourism industry.
The report suggests the true test for Japanese tourism will come during February's Chinese New Year peak season, when cancellations could have devastating effects on hotels that typically see two to three times their normal occupancy rates.
