The draw ceremony, overseen by Tournament Director and Chinese tennis legend Li Na, alongside Hong Kong China Tennis Association President Michael Cheng, Honorary Secretary Oscar Chow, and WTA Supervisor Clare Wood, was joined by fifth seed Maya Joint of Australia and seventh seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania. The event marked the official start of the tournament, which promises fierce competition. Top seed and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic will face Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round, while last year’s runner-up, Katie Boulter from the UK, takes on Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. Former 2023 champion Leylah Fernandez returns to compete against China’s Wang Xiyu, and popular player Anna Kalinskaya will go head-to-head with Kamilla Rakhimova. Chinese star Zhang Shuai is set to play Slovenia’s Veronika Erjavec, and Canada’s Victoria Mboko will challenge Australia’s Talia Gibson. Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, who received a wildcard entry, will take on Hungary’s Dalma Galfi and shared her enthusiasm for competing in Hong Kong for the first time, especially under the direction of her idol, Li Na.
Local fans have much to cheer for, with Hong Kong’s Eudice Chong and Cody Wong earning wildcard entries into the singles main draw. Chong will face Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands, while Wong awaits her opponent pending the outcome of Sunday’s final qualifying matches. In the first round of qualifiers, Hong Kong’s Maggie Ng battled China’s Lu Jia-Jing but fell 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, while Kallista Liu lost to Japan’s Haruka Kaji 6-7, 4-6.
