A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's West Java province yesterday, killing at least 46 people and injuring up to 700.
The quake struck on land in Cianjur, about 75 kilometers southeast of the capital Jakarta, at a depth of 10 kilometers, but there was no possibility of a tsunami, the weather and geophysics agency said.
Some buildings were reduced almost entirely to rubble, with some residents trapped within.
Several homes and an Islamic boarding school were damaged, while electricity in the area was down, disrupting communications.
