The nomination period for Hong Kong’s Legislative Election entered its second day with a flurry of activity, as election officials received eight additional nomination forms, bringing the total number of candidates to 31.
The race is heating up across various constituencies and sectors, with notable figures from trade unions and political alliances stepping forward to compete for seats in the city’s legislature.
In the geographical constituencies, the Hong Kong Island West district saw one new nomination, submitted by current Labour Sector lawmaker Kwok Wai-keung, who is affiliated with the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (HKFTU) and is now venturing into direct elections.
This brings the total nominations for Hong Kong Island West to two.
Meanwhile, the New Territories North constituency has yet to receive any nomination forms.
Across all geographical constituencies, a total of 16 candidates have now thrown their hats into the ring.
In the functional constituencies, which represent specific professional or sectoral groups, the Labour Sector recorded one additional nomination from HKFTU’s Wan Chai District Councillor Lam Wai-kong, bringing the total number of candidates in this sector to two.
Overall, the functional constituencies have garnered five nominations so far.
The Election Committee constituency, a key segment of the legislature, saw a significant increase with six new nominations.
Among them is incumbent lawmaker Junius Ho Kwan-yiu, who is seeking re-election, alongside HKFTU’s chair Kingsley Wong Kwok, who is also running for another term, and FTU vice-chair Joyce Ma Kwong-yu, who is making her first bid for a seat.
The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) also saw two of its members, incumbents Ben Chan Hang-pan and Rock Chen Chung-nin, join the race, alongside Kwun Tong District Council member Hung Kam-in.
This brings the total number of nominations in the Election Committee constituency to 10.
