The Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau has launched a comprehensive webpage to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The initiative features a wide array of activities designed for public participation to foster a collective remembrance of history.
The newly launched webpage serves as a central hub, detailing commemorative activities organized by government bureaus, regional organizations, non-governmental groups, and community sectors stretching from this year into the next.
The scheduled events include an official ceremony, exhibitions of historical artefacts and photographs, guided tours to significant wartime relics, educational seminars, thematic lectures, workshops, film screenings, micro-dramas, book exhibitions, and cultural performances related to the War of Resistance.
Under the theme “remembering history, honoring martyrs, cherishing peace, and creating a great future,” the government aims to deepen public understanding of the wartime era and the profound significance of the victory.
This will be achieved through diverse educational initiatives and support for events organized by non-governmental bodies, said a government spokesman.
The official commemorative ceremony is set to take place on September 3 at the Hong Kong City Hall Memorial Garden. Two major exhibitions will be central to the commemorations.
The first, titled “United in Arms, Standing for Peace—80th Anniversary of the Chinese Victory in the War of Resistance,” is jointly organized by the Hong Kong Museum of History (HKMH) and the National Museum of China. It will run from August 27 to December 15.
The second exhibition, “Standing Together for Peacebuilding: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the War of Resistance in Guangdong and Hong Kong,” is a collaboration between the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence (MWRCD) and the Guangdong Museum of Revolutionary History. It will be open to the public from August 29, 2025, to July 8, 2026.
In a parallel effort, the Hong Kong Film Archive, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the MWRCD, will host “Cine Memories of the War of Resistance.”
This event will feature free screenings of six films, including “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru,” from August 30 to September 20.
Furthermore, the government and various non-governmental organizations will launch additional thematic activities. These include organizing exchange tours to the mainland for students, facilitating local history study programs, and encouraging museum visits. The goal is to promote a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of this pivotal historical period among all segments of the community.
