The Legislative Council (LegCo) opened a new chapter on Wednesday as it revealed its completely refurbished library, now featuring a themed exhibition zone, a high-tech Makerspace, and immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences designed to engage visitors.
LegCo president Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen noted that the library had maintained traditional operations since the Legislative Council Complex opened in 2011.
With the recent expansion of the Complex, the library's upgrade presents an opportunity to attract more visitors and enrich their experience.
History enthusiasts can explore the new exhibition zone, which chronicles Hong Kong's legislative evolution since 1843, highlighting the dynamic between the legislature and government.
To foster technological curiosity among students, the library has introduced a "Makerspace" equipped with 3D printers, drones, and augmented reality devices.
Another innovative feature is "Battle with the Secretariat," a game challenging visitors to test their transcription skills against the LegCo Secretariat's AI system.
Embracing interactive learning, the library partnered with a local startup to develop two VR experiences: a simulated oath-taking ceremony for council members and an educational quiz challenge.
Leung humorously suggested legislators try the quiz, adding, "Those who fail to meet the standard might want to reconsider their position."
Post-renovation highlights include three new photo opportunities: a scale model of the expanded LegCo complex, an AR photo booth, and a historical wall displaying physical records spanning nearly 180 years of legislative sessions.
Leung expressed his vision for the library to evolve into a multifaceted public space that combines exhibitions, policy research, interactive technology, and educational activities.
"This transformation ensures our library remains relevant and appealing to future generations," he said.
