Stocks tumbled into the break today in Hong Kong after a rally that had lasted eight days. The benchmark Hang Seng Index shed 361.11 ppoints, or 1.16 percent at 30,723.83.

The broader Hang Seng Tech Index has given up 283.29 points, or 2.59 percent at 10,661.93.

In mainland China, the CSI 300 index fell by 0.83 percent at 5,759.37. The blue chip index climbed by 2.1 percent to an all-time high of 5,930.9 points, before retreating at the end of the morning session, while the Shanghai Composite Index inched up by 0.4 percent at 3,669.42 points.

Traders had bid the CSI 300 Index up to 13-year highs in January, but momentum cooled as investors shifted a record level of money into Hong Kong stocks as domestic prices surged, Bloomberg reported.

Among Hong Kong heavyweights, Alibaba Group (9988) dropped by 1.95 percent at HK$261.80.

Tencent Holdings (0700) has added 0.40 percent at HK$760.50. China Mobile (0941) has risen by 3.13 percent at HK$51.05. HSBC (0005) is up by 0.11 percent at HK$46.10.

China Unicom (0762) rallied by 4.27 percent at HK$4.88, the top gainer among the blue chips. However, Wharf Real Estate Investment (1997) dived by 4.91 percent at HK$46.45.

In China. the tech-heavy start-up board ChiNext fell 3.2 percent by midday.
