The East Kowloon Cultural Centre (EKCC) will kick off a three-month opening season next week, featuring 17 programs.
Speaking on a radio program on Wednesday, Betty Au Yuk-fong, assistant director (cultural development) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, noted that the centre has staged 20 trial programs since last August, attracting over 13,000 visitors across 500 performances.
She mentioned the “Lullabies”, a light installation exhibition hosted at the centre last year, has drawn nearly 10,000 visitors in 370 sessions.
These exhibitions have provided much inspiration and could help people from different backgrounds appreciate art technology, she said.
Au added that EKCC is the latest international-level performance venue in Hong Kong after the West Kowloon Xiqu Centre. It is also a flagship venue with the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
EKCC has an entirely different positioning compared to other performance venues in Hong Kong, focusing on long-term performances and art technology as its two main directions, she added.
Meanwhile, Au said the centre houses five main performance venues, accommodating between 120 and 1,200 audience members. Each venue is equipped with an immersive sound system, high-performance live streaming system, high-definition projection system and stage automatic tracking system.
The venues can also incorporate projection mapping into dance shows, promoting the integration of technology to host large-scale professional performances.
Au said the 1,200-seat hall will be mainly used for large-scale events and musicals, while the 500-seat theater can accommodate medium-sized stage productions.
The smaller venue -- named “The Beats” -- with over a hundred seats can be used for band and independent music group performances.
