Chinese tech giant Alibaba (9988) has once again reshuffled its corporate structure by merging food delivery platform Ele.me and online travel service Fliggy into its China e-commerce business group, according to an internal letter cited by mainland media.
Alibaba's chief executive Eddie Wu Yongming reportedly described the move as a strategic upgrade in an internal letter, saying it marks the company's shift “from an e-commerce platform to a broader consumer business.”
Wu added that Alibaba will focus on optimizing and integrating business models and organizational structures from a user perspective to deliver richer and higher-quality consumer experiences.
Ele.me and Fliggy will retain their corporate structures but align business decision-making and execution with the strategic goals of Alibaba's China e-commerce unit, mainland media reported.
Fan Yu will remain chairman and chief executive of Ele.me while Nan Tian will continue as chief executive of Fliggy. Both will report to Jiang Fan, head of Alibaba’s China e-commerce business.
Meanwhile, Alibaba said its recent push into instant commerce, or "shangou" in China, has generated over 60 million daily orders in collaboration with Ele.me less than two months after launch.
Retail order volume has surged 179 percent year-on-year, with an on-time delivery rate holding steady at 96 percent.
