The Liberal Studies subject under the senior secondary education will be renamed, with the grading system changed to show only pass or fail from the previous seven levels with Level 5** being the highest and level 1 the lowest.

Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said the current Liberal Studies has attracted heated debates and has been stigmatized.

“The subject will be renamed and revamped with refined content. The content will be cut short into half from the original syllabus, the Independent Enquiry Study will also be canceled,” said Yeung.

He added that students will have chances to go on field trips to the mainland, the trip will not count towards the result of the subject.

The Education Bureau will also set up a recommended textbook list for the subject, meaning textbooks used in the subject will have to be submitted for review.

As for education on naitonal security, Yeung said authorities are working on providing more resources for school teachers. School teachers may need to attend training programs for up to 30 hours.
