A massive explosion rocked Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, early Saturday morning amid escalating tensions between Venezuela and the US, sending thick smoke into the air.
The Associated Press reported at least seven explosions in Caracas, along with the sound of low-flying aircraft. Power outages occurred in the southern part of the city, near a major military base.
Caracas, as well as the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira, were attacked.
It was reported by US media that US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes on Venezuelan military facilities and other targets. Officials confirmed the US military carried out the airstrikes, according to Fox News.
The Venezuelan government issued an official statement accusing the US of attacking civilian and military facilities in several states, calling it "military aggression."
Venezuela has declared a state of emergency.
CNN reported that the first explosion occurred around 1.50am local time.
Trump has accused Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro of fueling drug crime and contributing to the influx of immigrants to the US. He claimed that all actions are aimed at curbing drug trafficking.
Maduro counters by accusing Trump of coveting the country's rich fossil fuel reserves and attempting to "colonize Venezuela."
The US is one of many countries opposing Maduro's bid of winning the 2024 election.
