Throughout 2024 and 2025, local venues and sporting organizations have embraced the sport, offering dedicated courts, coaching, and regular leagues that connect diverse communities and encourage active living.
This momentum peaked in August when Hong Kong hosted the inaugural Professional Pickleball Association Tour Asia Hong Kong Open at Kai Tak Arena. Over 600 players, from enthusiastic amateurs to seasoned professionals, filled the 12 newly constructed courts, marking a significant milestone for pickleball and generating excitement across the city.
Organized by the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association, the tournament attracted regional stars including China’s Long Yufei, fresh from a gold-medal victory in Malaysia, and Hong Kong’s Jack Wong Hong-kit, who competed for a triple crown in front of a packed, vocal crowd and secured a dramatic victory in the men’s singles.
Participants competed for a prize pool exceeding HK$463,000 as spectators flocked to the finals, and the city’s pickleball buzz extended beyond the Kai Tak Arena. Over a dozen venues now offer indoor and outdoor courts, regular classes, leagues, and lively community events. Public centers managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department have introduced free outdoor pickleball courts, further increasing participation, particularly among retirees, families, and schoolchildren.
Organizers anticipate a 60 percent increase in player numbers compared to last year, driven by pickleball’s friendly environment, positive word of mouth, and lively pace. The Hong Kong Pickleball League describes it as a sport for everyone, building new friendships and a healthier Hong Kong. Online search interest now ranks Hong Kong among the top pickleball cities in Asia, with the autumn program featuring a variety of new events and tournaments.
As the city embraces pickleball both as high-level competition and an inclusive social activity, Hong Kong’s courts now reflect a vibrant spirit, where fun, fitness, and local pride come together.
