SPCA launches 'dating-style' adoption app

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has introduced a groundbreaking mobile app called "Adoption Date."

The innovative app, inspired by dating platforms, has revolutionized the way people connect with their potential animal companions, the SPCA said.

A spokesman for the SPCA told The Standard that there are currently around 400 animals awaiting adoption in the city, including dogs, cats and small animals housed within SPCA centers. "While the adoption rate witnessed a surge during the pandemic, it has seen a decline following the wave of emigration that occurred post-pandemic," he said, adding that the SPCA has been actively organizing monthly adoption events to encourage more adoptions.

However, to further boost adoption rates, they collaborated with a team of tech-savvy volunteers to develop the "Adoption Date" mobile app. This app draws inspiration from popular dating apps and assists users in finding the most suitable pets for adoption.

When using the "Adoption Date" app, each animal is presented with a comprehensive profile featuring their photo, name, age, breed, kennel location and additional information.

Users can then engage with these profiles by "swiping right," similar to dating apps, indicating their interest in a particular animal. If a connection is established, they can arrange to meet the pet at the designated shelter location.

The app has been designed to provide users with an immersive discovery experience, showcasing a wide range of animals available for adoption through the SPCA. It caters to both prospective adopters and foster parents.

Registered users receive timely notifications about the latest adoption events and updates on animals in need of foster homes, as such homes are often required on short notice.

By launching the "Adoption Date" app, the SPCA aims to help Hong Kong residents conveniently find their perfect companions at any time and from anywhere, thereby addressing declining adoption rates in the region.

To commemorate the app's launch, the SPCA will organize a special "Dog Adoption Date" event on February 24 in Sheung Wan.
