Police have arrested seven individuals after multiple robbers stormed a gold processing workshop in Hung Hom and fled with around HK$59 million in gold bars, bricks, and powder, along with HK$30,000 in cash.
The heist occurred on Wednesday when 10 robbers confined six employees within a room before systematically looting the storage area for gold. They successfully absconded with approximately 65 kilograms of gold bars, bricks, and powder.
In addition to the gold, the perpetrators secured around HK$30,000 in cash from a safe in the premises.
Subsequently, they compelled the six individuals to exit the unit and barricaded the workshop door with an iron chain. The staff later notified the workshop manager regarding the incident.
The arrestees, comprising six males and one female aged between 32 and 60, hold Hong Kong identity cards. They were arrested on charges of theft and aiding an offender.
Police said the alleged mastermind behind the heist remains at large. According to sources, the mastermind and the factory manager were business partners. It was claimed that the manager had informed the partner of a temporary closure due to poor business conditions. However, it was later revealed that the factory continued operations clandestinely.
Suspected of being dissatisfied with not receiving a share of the profits, the mastermind, along with several accomplices, orchestrated the break-in to seize a substantial quantity of gold.
