The University of Hong Kong (HKU) stated Thursday that it has issued a warning letter to a male law student, requiring him to submit an apology for using artificial intelligence software to generate explicit images of classmates and others. However, the university emphasized that this action does not indicate the conclusion of its ongoing investigation.
The student utilized free online artificial intelligence to create approximately 700 explicit images of 20 to 30 women without consent. Victims included university classmates, seniors, friends, primary school classmates, and secondary school teachers, using their social media photos.
HKU clarified the warning and apology do not signify the investigation's conclusion. The university stated it has been following up on the complaints and, as the student admitted the actions, is treating it with utmost seriousness. Deterrent measures were implemented before any mandatory investigation.
Relevant departments have recently contacted the student again to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. HKU acknowledges that some affected individuals have approached its Equal Opportunity Unit.
The accused student expressed deep remorse and voluntarily withdrew from a year-long overseas exchange program next academic year. HKU confirmed it will cooperate with law enforcement, continue examining details, and take further action if necessary.
