A 62-year-old worker died on Tuesday afternoon after falling from a height while dismantling bamboo scaffolding outside a building in Fanling.
The incident occurred shortly before 3pm today at a construction site on On Chuen Street. The worker, surnamed Tong, reportedly lost his footing while dismantling bamboo scaffolding at the external wall of the five-story building.
Tong lost consciousness and sustained serious injuries after falling into the impluvium between the site and the Grace Industrial Building.
He was rushed to North District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after failed resuscitation efforts.
Police and Labour Department officers arrived at the scene and entered the Grace Industrial Building to conduct investigations.
According to records, the construction site spans 19,100 square feet. The property had been acquired by a real estate group and is currently being redeveloped into a nine-story data center.
The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims expresses condolences to the deceased worker's family.
Siu Sin-man, chief executive of the organization, stated they have yet to ascertain the cause and circumstances of the incident, expressing hope that the employers will promptly provide assistance.
The association has also dispatched staff to the hospital to provide emergency support to the family members.
In addition, Siu stressed the importance of scaffolding safety for workers, noting that at least six serious accidents involving scaffolding have been recorded since last year, resulting in six deaths and 14 injuries.
The association urged the Labour Department to thoroughly investigate the causes of these accidents.
