What additional steps can society take to create a brighter future for those in need? The Hong Kong Jockey Club has recently announced the expansion of JC PROJECT LIFT to include the city’s first two light public housing projects with the aim of helping grassroots families transition out of poverty. This follows the launch of the first phase targeting underprivileged families living in transitional housing.

JC PROJECT LIFT is a five-year project which aims to reduce poverty through the pioneering Urban Graduation Approach tailored to local challenges. Its goal is to benefit over 14,000 families in 26 locations comprising 24 transitional housing projects and two light housing projects. It has been created and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with the support of the HKSAR Government’s Housing Bureau and Labour and Welfare Bureau.

To encourage participation, families with regular savings and stable employment will be eligible for an additional HK$5,000 subsidy under the Family Capacity Building Fund. Over 110 participants will serve as LIFT Ambassadors, actively reaching out to more residents and promoting social capital.

Since its launch, JC PROJECT LIFT has benefited around 7,700 households and trained nearly 60 Family Capacity Building Planners to help families develop capacity building plans and goals. Five targeted interventions have encouraged residents to step out of their comfort zone and build connections with the community. Nearly 90% of High Yield Savings Scheme participants have cultivated a saving habit, steadily strengthening their financial resources.
