Hong Kong passengers will soon enjoy one-stop taxi booking and cashless payments with the Octopus mobile app, as the company is set to offer taxi-hailing services.

This follows a partnership between Octopus Cards Limited and BigBoss Taxi, which is set to hit the road next month as the first fleet to participate in the program.

The company will also pilot a payment system for drivers, initially planning to expand its use to approximately 300 BigBoss Taxi drivers before extending it to more fleets.

Nora Tang, head of the transport business of Octopus Cards Limited, noted that the collaboration aims to attract more local taxis to operate on the platform.

Tang added that the payment system is an extension of the commercial version of the Octopus account for taxi drivers, which is currently used by around 30,000 drivers.

The system will provide an in-vehicle payment option and will also support fleets in directly transferring salaries to drivers' Octopus or other bank accounts.

Alex Chiu Chun-wai, chief operating officer of BigBoss Taxi, believed that the system would enable drivers to receive their salaries the following day, compared to the traditional six- to seven-day waiting period.
