Hong Kong and Macau payload specialists are expected to embark on their first spaceflight mission as early as next year.
Payload specialists, a category of astronauts defined by their mission type, are professional scientific researchers who will conduct scientific and applied research aboard space stations.
Spokesman for the China Manned Space Agency Lin Xiqiang noted the Hong Kong and Macau astronauts quickly adapted to their work and living environment, successfully integrating into the astronaut team.
“[They are] diligent in their training, and all tasks are progressing smoothly. They are currently engaged in studies and training related to space technology.”
“As payload specialists, they are expected to carry out their first spaceflight mission as early as 2026,” he said.
Lin stated that the fourth batch of astronauts has been undergoing theoretical and specialized training since joining in August last year.
He noted that through dedicated study and proactive training, all members of the fourth batch have rapidly transitioned into their roles, strengthening their foundational knowledge and improving their physical fitness.
He added that the time from selection to flight mission varies among astronauts based on their training and experience.
The training for this batch is being organized systematically, and once they qualify for flight, they will be considered for flight crews, Lin said.
According to the China Manned Space Agency, a total of ten candidates were selected from the fourth batch of astronauts in June last year. This group includes eight space pilots and two payload specialists from Hong Kong and Macau.
Sources indicated earlier that the city’s first-ever payload specialist is Lai Ka-ying, a female chief inspector of the Hong Kong Police Force.
It is understood that Lai has obtained a doctoral degree and has been training in Beijing since last year, having qualified as an astronaut.
